Facts of IRBn LD, DD & DNH

Introduction

India Reserve Battalion, Lakshadweep, Daman & Diu and Dadra & Nagar Haveli was sanctioned in the year 1996 by Government Of India order dated 2nd February 1996. 50 % of the strength has been recruited form UT of Lakshadweep and the remaining 50 % from UTs of Daman & Diu and Dadra & Nagar Haveli in line with the Govt. of India orders. The strength of the Battalion has been shared for the three Union Territories at the ratio of two Companies per UT with the Headquarter at Kavaratti. The recruitment was made from the year 1999 onwards in four phases and the recruits were imparted basic training in BSF training Institutions such as STC BSF Bangalore, Tekenpur and Jodhpur. The Battalion, on raising, has been formally dedicated to the nation by Shri. L K Advani, the then Hon'ble Home Minister on 16/12/2000.

Besides the Commandant, who is an IPS Officer appointed by Ministry of Home Affairs, the posts of Deputy Commandant, Assistant Commandant, Medical Officer, Inspectors, Assistant Sub-Inspectors, Pharmacists and Head Constables are to be filled on deputation basis till such time the Battalion direct recruits mature for promotion against these posts, as per Recruitment Rule.

Deployment

The Battalion is under the Command and dual superintendence of the Administration of UTs of Lakshadweep, Daman & Diu and Dadra & Nagar Haveli. The budget allocation is also from these two UTs proportionately.

Training:

 All the direct recruit of this Battalion have completed their basic plus attachment training in premier training institute of BSF, CRPF, Army and police academy.

Deployment: The recruitment of this battalion has been made from the UTs of Lakshadweep, Daman & Diu and Dadra and Nagar Haveli as 50% of the personnel have been recruited from Lakshadweep and remaining 50% from UTs of Daman & Diu and Dadra and Nagar Haveli and 1/3rd of total strength is deployed in UT of Lakshadweep and remaining 2/3rd in UTs of Daman & Diu and Dadra and Nagar Haveli.

Infrastructure

Headquarter of the Battalion at Kavaratti is presently housed in the three blocks of type-1 quarters. Acquisition of land for construction of Administration block and accommodation building is presently pending with Dy. Collector (Land Acquisition Collector), Kavaratti. In Islands, the Battalion units are functioning in old premises vacated by MPSAF. There is acute shortage of accommodation for men and material in all the location including HQ Kavaratti. An area of 40 acres of land has been acquired at Mota Randha in Silvassa. The construction of two 180 men barrack with all amenities, one Quarter Guard building, one Communication complex building has been completed and occupied. UT Administration of Diu was pleased to allot 40,000 Sq. meter Govt. land for the Battalion and the construction of various buildings for Battalion company is to be completed by CPWD ad same is occupied.
